Iranian nuclear experts who claimed to have kidnapped U.S. spy appeared on Tuesday in Washington, where officials confirmed he had lived for some time but said he may go.

Iran says U.S. agents had kidnapped Shahram Amiri after he arrived in Saudi Arabia to perform hajj last year. But speculation has circulated stating he defected and worked with the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), U.S..

U.S. officials deny that the kidnapping of Iranian scientists, although there are some videos that appear on the Internet showing people recognized Amiri allegedly escaped from U.S. agents in Virginia.

Amiri refuge in the Iranian section of Pakistan Embassy in Washington, Tuesday, and some officials confirmed for the first time that he was in the U.S..

"He was free to go. He was free to come. This is a decision that he himself should take," said Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters.

Hillary also mention the case of three young climbers on U.S. citizens, who were arrested Iran for nearly a year after accidentally entering Iranian border during ascent. Hillary renewed pressure for their release.

A spokesman for the U.S. State Department Phillip Crowley said Amiri was planning to return to Iran, but could not complete the whole preparation time for transit through third countries.

"He has been here in some time. I'm not going to describe for how long, but he chose to return," said Crowley.

Crowley declined to comment whether Amiri has provided U.S. intelligence data but said U.S. officials had made contact with Amiri.

An observer who has a relationship with Iran the U.S. government told AFP that Amiri, aged 30 years, has defected and moved to the Sun Belt in the city Tuscon, Arizona, but his family in Iran under pressure.

"He is not the result of a big game. He too sells itself. He has dicecar various questions and then allowed to stay in Tuscon," says one academic, who requested anonymity to discuss such sensitive information.

"He dreamed about success as a deserter. But he realized his future was not bright as a renegade and he does not speak the local and feel alone," he added.
